The Waiting Dress by Cynthia Santiago

Born White Plains, NY, USA
Based in Lisbon, Portugal

While a common thread is unraveling, we are at a cross point, unsure of what to do, what to believe, whom to trust, or how to dress, … so we wait.

Expressionistic, Contemporary Art that, without judgment or determination, poses a juxtaposition of present-day matters. The compositions reflect images of a humanity that unites and collides, that seeks safety yet craves excitement, holds onto the familiar but needs to progress. In a world that is contemporaneously clashing over ancestral, patriarchal and nationalistic traditions (norms), “comforts” are challenged. Humanity waits to see what happens next.

Personal Philosophy:

It matters what you think, what you do, how you do it, where you are and who you’re with. Today matters, tomorrow matters, everything matters but, overall, in general and explicitly, art matters. Art does not insist on knowing. It is the inner-sphere of everything. Art says “You’re allowed”, so do art.  Without the “creative being” there is no sense of being.

Jardim of Predjudice

I have been studying the body and movement as a professional dancer, and then as a women's yoga teacher since 2014; therefore, my works now convey my personal, subjective view of body image and women's roles. I explore the concept of the body as a container for our true selves and question widely accepted ideas of what a woman should be. My heroines are not beautiful in the traditional sense of the word. They are ordinary, but their ordinariness is the essence.

Each of my works is a study of my own behavioral patterns and fears. I strive for the viewer to see not only the image but also feel the emotional experience in every work.

For me, conveying meaning is more important than adhering to a specific medium or technique. I use oil paints, clay, thread, and graphic materials to express an idea in my art. I extensively use repeating patterns and bright colors, maintaining ease and simplicity in my work.

Colors by Aude

“I started painting a year ago as a way of relaxing and keeping a balanced mental health. It took me through a lot of techniques, a lot of new emotions and a lot of discoveries. I always loved art and colors and only recently did I allow myself to go deeper and call myself an artist. This show is the first step into making something bigger with my creations. I aim at bringing joy through colors in your own journey. “

Long Exposure: Photography by Hobit Lafaye

I see art as an act of exploration, both for the creator and those experiencing it. Its purpose is to provide a realm of possibility or to reveal, rather than replicate. I create images of primarily natural scenes that go beyond chronicling and flirt with abstraction. I have a deep love of nature and seek to share this connection to place and the beauty of the natural world, for its own sake as well as our need for it.

For me, capturing images is a means of experiencing the world, as well as a form of meditation. It takes me outside of myself as I walk through the woods, crouch on a riverside rock, revel in a detail of the landscape. Likewise, developing images is an opportunity for play, exploration, and those “ah ha, yes!” moments. I work intuitively, drawn by light, shadow, texture, form, and metaphor. I am consistently capitvated by the subtle magnificent of trees, leaves, and water in all its forms. I feel alive and a sense of connection as I experience and reveal the wonder and joy that still exists in the world despite our current era. My work is an invitation to savor a moment and join the adventure.

The language of photography is light, focus, composition, and time. This series of new work is an exploration of time within the possibilities and constraints of the medium, and specifically long exposures. Whereas photographs typically capture a split second in time, these images were created using longer time frames, capturing the world as it moves in time, while conversely slowing it down to what the naked eye cannot. More than playing with the medium, these images invite you to pay attention to time and, with hope, the role it plays in your life.

Paintings by Clyde Yoshida

I studied life drawing, painting, and art history at El Camino Community College and San Diego State University where I earned my bachelor’s degree in fine art and also my teaching credential. In 1995 I attended Harvard University and earned my master’s degree in education. There, I focused on the important role creativity plays in our development and in our learning.

My creative life is tied to finding universal truth and enlightenment. I find calm and beauty in chaos and connection to the universe in all of my creative expressions: music, painting, photography. My love of nature solidifies my belief that quenching our thirst for knowledge and promoting peace is a matter of channeling the universe with creative powers of mind and simply paying attention. Presenting my work is my way of expressing my inner thoughts to the world.

Although I constantly pursue something unique and innovative in my work, I am heavily influenced by ethnic arts, and the ingenious works of Degas, Picasso, Rousseau, Gauguin, Monet, and Klee, to name a few. My awareness of masterworks and all things intriguing and beautiful are the puzzle pieces that influence me, but how the pieces fit together with line, color, lights, and darks fit together and emerge as a unique representation still perplexes me. Something in my mind takes over, resulting in a painting or song. It’s just something that my subconscious self needs to do to process the world and share.

Travel has also been an important part of my life. Living in Portugal since the summer of 2022 has been a gold mine of inspiration with new friendships, the charms of historic architecture, and the beautiful setting beside the Sado River and Arrábida Peninsula. I must also thank my new friends for their encouragement and creative energy, most of which stems from their own metamorphosis as they settle in this new home country. The entirety of the new location and nurturing relationships have contributed to the renaissance happening in my creative brain. This is what I hope you’ll observe in the paintings included in the Color of the Sado.

I’ve previously exhibited my work in San Diego at the Ray at Night and the 10th Avenue Arts Center.
